WATCH ABOVE: Tue, Jul 5: "A critical situation." That's how Feed Nova Scotia is describing their level of food donations right now. The organization distributes food to 147 food banks and meal programs across the program. But as Global's Rebecca Lau reports, some of those agencies are now forced to turn clients away. – Jul 5, 2016

Feed Nova Scotia says they’re desperately looking for help filling the shelves of food banks in the province as they head into summer months.

Stocks in the warehouses are “critically low,” meaning the food banks have less to offer to families struggling to put food on their tables.

“We’re already hearing from our member food banks who’ve been faced with the tough task of turning people away,” Feed Nova Scotia executive director Nick Jennery stated in a release.

The latest health and medical news emailed to you every Sunday.

Jennery is asking both community members and corporate food donors to help in any way they can.

Feed Nova Scotia added it usually does see a drop in donations during summer months, but this year the outlook is worse because of fewer donations during the winter.

“The need is always significant, and we don’t make a habit of sounding the alarm bells,” Jennery said.

“But we’ve hit a critical low, and as scary as that is for us, it’s even more frightening for families trying to feed their children.”

Feed Nova Scotia is asking for food items like pasta and pasta sauce, canned soups and stews, canned meat, hot and cold cereals, along with donations of fresh produce.

According to the food bank, if one of every three Nova Scotians donated one kilogram of food this week, the organization’s food needs would be taken care of up to September.
