Canadian academic jailed in Iran for dabbing in feminism

Professor Homa Hoodfar was forbidden to leave Iran in March and was then arrested in June. Concordia University

MONTREAL – The family of a Montreal-based university professor jailed in Iran says she is being investigated for dabbling in feminism and security matters.

Homa Hoodfar’s niece says an announcement made Friday by the Tehran public prosecutor is the first indication of why the 65-year-old was arrested June 6.

Amanda Ghahremani says the family doesn’t know whether Hoodfar has been charged with a crime.

Hoodfar, a professor at Montreal’s Concordia University, is an anthropologist who has conducted research on Muslim women in various regions of the world.

Her family says she was in Iran to visit family and do academic work.

A spokesman for Foreign Affairs Minister Stephane Dion says the government is actively involved in Hoodfar’s case and is doing what it can to help her.
