Wildfire near Halifax contained, no reported injuries
A wildfire that burned for hours on Monday has been contained. Fire crews have left the scene, and there might still be some fire activity overnight but nearby residents shouldn't be alarmed. Global's Steve Silva explains why – Jun 20, 2016

A wildfire that burned for hours Monday afternoon is not considered “under control” but has been “contained” with no reported injuries or structure damages, according to Halifax Regional Fire & Emergency.

Fire crews left the area by about sunset but are monitoring the area overnight. Two crews will return in the morning to make sure the fire, estimated to span about 2 kilometres, has been fully extinguished.

The fire is believed to be located in Blue Mountain – Birch Cove Lakes Wilderness Area, around and possibly in Lakeside, N.S., which is about a five to 10 minute drive west from Bayers Lake.

“This was a very intense fire, a crowning fire higher in the trees and moving fairly quickly when we first encountered it,” Division Chief Dave Meldrum said.

About 25 firefighters helped put out the fire in the woods while another 20 waited on standby.

Crews were joined by the Department of Natural Resources, which added personnel. The department also brought in a helicopter, which focused on “the head” of the fire, Meldrum added.

“Fire activity” is possible overnight.

“That’s OK, that’s normal, and folks shouldn’t be unduly alarmed over that,” Meldrum said.

During the nighttime, humidity changes and winds decrease for the better, “and these fires actually sit down quite nicely. The cost benefit of putting humans in the woods to fight that fire after dark just doesn’t make sense.”

The investigation into the cause of the fire is expected to begin Tuesday morning.
