Innovators and pilots took over the SAIT campus for ‘Drone Fair’ on Sunday.
Drone Fair is a one-day exhibition celebrating drone technology with first-person drone races and conversations with drone experts, vendors and enthusiasts with extensive access to the technology.
Organizers of the fair say drone popularity has soared dramatically in the last several years.
Nearly $2 billion dollars worth of drones has been sold worldwide and that’s expected to increase to $11 billion by 2024.
SAIT and Transport Canada are both working to raise awareness of drone safety for commercial and personal use.
“What’s new in the world of drones right now is particularly in the commercial space. A lot of new applications coming in for drones are being used to collect data or for using robotics for commercial applications,” Patrick Weinmayr, SAIT’s director for products and partnerships, said.
Students and professionals took part in drone races all afternoon.
Drone Fair was created to promote the growing drone industry in Canada with respect to innovation and safety.
The fair was created by Declan Sweeney and Steve Watts, who wanted to create an event that celebrated innovators, vendors, pilots and drone enthusiasts.
