VIDEO: peacock attack on young girl at Calgary Zoo

The Calgary Zoo has removed an aggressive peacock from zoo grounds after it attacked a young girl.

Mandi Anderson says the peacock approached her children as they were eating lunch outdoors.

Her two–year-daughter, Brooklyn, bent down to get a better look at the bird, and a family friend with the group warned Brooklyn to move back.

When the little girl stood up, the peacock lunged, pecking her in the face.

A daycare worker who witnessed the attack rushed to help with a first aid kit. A security guard then took Brooklyn to the zoo office where the family was told to take her to the Children’s Hospital.

Fortunately Brooklyn did not need stitches.

Anderson says the nurse at the zoo mentioned this was the second peacock attack on a child she had seen in a week.

“Brooklyn was so lucky that she didn’t lose her eye or anything like that, and I just don’t want to see it happen to another kid. I’m hoping they put it into an enclosure or stop letting them roam – get rid of them.”

The Zoo says about a dozen peacocks roam free on the grounds and while they can sometimes become aggressive if they feel threatened, there are no plans to enclose the birds.

“Everyone loves the peacocks. They get wonderful pictures and we believe Calgarians enjoy that,” says zoo spokesperson Colleen Baird. “We wouldn’t want to put them away . We want Calgarians to experience that freely.”
