Shoppers at a Lowe’s store in Anchorage, Alaska were treated to far more than they bargained for Tuesday after a pregnant moose delivered her baby – right in the parking lot.

KTVA News in Anchorage reports that shopper Katherine Warren first spotted the moose with her newborn baby on a tiny median in the parking lot of the Lowe’s at Tikahtnu Commons.

“It is exciting, it’s a new life, you know, so it’s very exciting, but at the other end, she needs her privacy,” Warren told KTVA News.

Warren informed staff at the store, who set up a safe zone around the mother and calf as a crowd began to gather.

The crowd cheered as the newborn moose rose to its feet. Meanwhile, mom was snacking on a tree and feeding the leaves to the newborn as it got used to walking about.

The pair spent most of their time curled up next to a parked black Jeep, before wandering into the nearby woods and out of sight.

Ken Marsh, a spokesperson for the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, said wildlife officials were on standby to assist store staff if needed in dealing with the moose, but that such action wasn’t necessary.
