A fire at a Surrey Burger King ended with no injuries – but quite the story for a group of young children.

“Smoke started bellowing out of top of the roof. I’m sure the kids won’t forget it,” said Munesh Shankar.

His seven-year-old daughter Praseela was having a birthday party at the Burger King at the 7400 block of King George Highway when the fire started on the roof due to a faulty air conditioning unit. Smoke could be seen from many blocks away, and the building had to be quickly evacuated.

But the fire department was able to bring out Praseela’s cake – still in its box – and Burger King management made sure the birthday party could continue at a nearby store.

“These kind of things can happen anytime, so I’m just glad this little girl is still going to have a birthday party, and we’ll make it better for her,” said the manager, who said they’ll treat the family to a meal in the future.
