A California man has been arrested on a slew of charges, including animal cruelty, after a dog was found high on drugs.
Orange County police said they found the dog, Bubba, at a motel on March 22.
Bubba and owner Joshua West, 40, were discovered in one of the rooms, surrounded by used needles and drugs.
West, who was wanted on an outstanding warrant, was arrested for a parole violation, possession of drug paraphernalia, heroin and methamphetamines.
“This strikes me as pretty horrible,” Lt. Robert Wright of the Tustin Police Dept. told KCAL9. “This is the first time we’ve ever heard of … animal under the influence.”
Animal services were called to the motel to treat the dog.
Tests revealed the terrier mix had meth and heroin in its system. Officials aren’t sure how the canine ingested the drugs.
Local residents were outraged by the incident.
“He should be locked up for a long time,” Nate Elmer said. “Crazy how people get away with it — not enough punishment for them.”
Bubba was taken to an animal welfare centre where he was put into detox. The centre is now looking for a home to adopt him.
