Amarjeet Sohi, the federal Minister of Infrastructure and Communities was in Halifax on Sunday and announced how the city will benefit from the federal Gas Tax Fund.
Sohi says the municipality plans to allocate $6 million from the fund to assist with public transit through the region.
“As a former bus driver and city councillor, I know how important investing in affordable and efficient public transit infrastructure is to allow Canadians to get to work on time and back home at the end of a long day,” said Minister Sohi.
Halifax Transit plans to purchase 21 conventional 40-foot accessible low floor buses in 2016-17 to replace older vehicles in the fleet.
“We are committed to strengthening our public transit system, which benefits residents every day. By working with other orders of government, and seeking out funding partnerships, we are able to improve public transit for our residents,” said Halifax Mayor Mike Savage in a news release about the funding.
This isn’t the first time that Halifax has used its share of the federal Gas Tax Fund for public transit.
Last year, the municipality spent $3.5 million on the purchase of nine new buses.
