Wildfire fears result in open burning bans in the Okanagan

KAMLOOPS – Fire prohibitions are being imposed throughout the Kamloops Fire Centre, which includes the Okanagan region, to try to prevent human-caused wildfires.

Effective Sunday at noon, Category 2 and 3 open fires are not allowed.

Prohibited activities include:

* The burning of any waste, slash or other materials (piled or unpiled) larger than one-half metre by one-half metre.

* The burning of more than two open fires of any size at the same time.

* Stubble or grass fires of any size over any area.

* The use of fireworks, sky lanterns or burning barrels of any size or description.

The bans are in effect until October 15th but may be relaxed if wildfire hazard conditions permit.

Campfires no larger than 50 centimetres high or wide are allowed as are cooking stoves that use gas, propane or briquettes.

Violations of the fire bans could result in $1,150 violation tickets, or in extreme cases, court charges where fines could reach $100,000.

In the past six weeks, there have been 36 wildfires within the Kamloops Fire Centre boundaries.

The government says many resulted from poorly planned open burning.
