The Alberta government will invest more than $17 million to redevelop two of the University of Calgary’s oldest buildings.

Over the next two years, the MacKimmie Block and Tower buildings will receive $8.6 million each.

The university plans to repurpose the buildings to accommodate future growth in the faculties of nursing and social work.

“Our government supports the University of Calgary’s efforts to plan for the future and ensure students continue to have access to world-class programming, learning spaces and resources for years to come,” he added.

The government said it expects to save up to $85 million by repurposing the buildings rather than demolishing and building new structures.

“We appreciate the support of the provincial government, as it is critical for meeting the growing demand from current students and those looking to upgrade their skills,” Elizabeth Cannon, President of the University of Calgary, said.

“The redevelopment will allow us to consolidate student services and add new study and classroom space within the heart of the main campus.”

The MacKimmie Block and Tower buildings were originally built in 1963 and 1972, and housed the University’s library.

The government’s investment was included in Budget 2016, which was released April 14.
