WINNIPEG – Residents in the West End took to the streets to give their neighbourhood a spring cleaning on Saturday afternoon.

It’s the twentieth time the community has held the event.

Around 80 people grabbed rakes, gloves and bags and cleaned trash off of local streets, sidewalks and green areas.

“It’s important to make people engage in their community and when you clean a street you have less chance to not pay attention after that,” said Baptiste Marcere, community greening and environment coordinator with the Daniel MacIntyre/St. Matthew’s Community Association.

The fact the event fell just one day after Earth Day which was just a coincidence, said Marcere.

Organizers hope the event will cause people to get involved in the community in other ways.
