STARS Air Ambulance has issued a warning about a scam that’s operating in Alberta.

In a post on its Facebook page, the charitable organization said a number of people in the province have received calls from someone claiming to be a STARS lottery representative.

That person then reportedly tells the would-be victim they have won a prize, but in order to have it shipped to them they must first transfer a certain amount of money through Western Union.

STARS said at no time will a representative from the organization request payment for delivery of a prize they won through a lottery or otherwise.

It said all lottery prize winners are notified in writing of what they have won and how to claim their prize.

STARS also said at no time will money be requested in order to claim a prize.

STARS said people should hang up, record the incoming number, then advise your local police department and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
