WINNIPEG – City streets can look grey and dirty this time of year but a downtown group is looking to change that.
When the snow and ice melt on downtown streets, lots of debris, garbage and especially sand gets left behind.
That’s where the Downtown Biz Enviro Team comes in.
“It’s all over the side walk it accumulates all over building edges and around furniture,” said Stephanie Voyce with Downtown Biz.
The 16-member crew clears all the sand and trash from downtown streets before moving outwards to other areas.
That cleaning process takes a few weeks. After it’s over they turn their attention to finer details.
“It’s looking at what out there needs to get wiped down, where can we even touch up site furniture where there’s some paint chipped off,” said Voyce.
Last year the city cut the Fall cleaning program to save $700,000.
There were concerns that the cancellation of the program would make Spring cleaning more difficult but Voyce and Enviro Team members say they haven’t seen a difference.
The city Spring cleaning program won’t start until mid-April.
