After three years and travelling more than 2,400 kilometres an American pit bull terrier named Gucci has been reunited with his owner in Virginia.

The Virginian-Pilot reports that Ayana Kelly and her family welcomed back their beloved dog late Thursday evening thanks in part to the work of a Rhode Island animal rescue group.

Gucci originally went missing in 2013 from the family’s yard in San Antonio, Texas, two weeks before the family moved to Norfolk, Virginia.

“We were devastated,” Kelly told the Pilot. “We really felt like we left a family member behind.”

The family considered adopting another dog until two weeks ago when they got a call from a San Antonio animal shelter saying the dog, which was microchipped, had been found.

The family was told someone had cared for Gucci for a while but couldn’t anymore, and eventually took him to the shelter.

Kelly said it was too far for her to pick up Gucci, so she hired an animal rescue group, For The Love of Paws R.I. Rescue and Transport, to drive the more than 2,400kms to pick up the dog in San Antonio.

Wendy Perry, who drove Gucci to the Kellys’ home, warned the family that Gucci wasn’t the same dog as the one who disappeared three years ago.

“From the looks of him, somebody may have used him for breeding or he was being abused. It’s really hard to tell,” Perry told the Pilot.

However, Kelly says Gucci was the same dog she remembered when he arrived Thursday. Video posted to YouTube showed the family reunited with the dog who was happily wagging his tail.
