Manitoba Election 2016: Assiniboia riding

Summary:  With longtime NDP MLA Jim Rondeau not seeking re-election, voters in Assiniboia will elect a rookie MLA on April 19. This area is considered a riding in play.

Boundaries: Assiniboia is located on the western tip of Winnipeg, north of Portage and Ness Avenues. The riding is bordered by Britain Boulevard on the east, and Headingley to the west.

Last Election: The NDP’s Rondeau defeated Progressive Conservative candidate Susan Auch by more than 1,800 votes, 58-37 per cent.

History: Rondeau held the seat from 1999 to 2016 for the NDP, but the well-known politician is not running this election. Assiniboia was dominated by the Liberals from 1949 to 1977 and then by the Progressive Conservatives from 1977 to 1999. Rondeau took over with the NDP banner in 1999 with a very small margin.
