EDMONTON — Fire crews are investigating an early morning blaze at a northwest Edmonton metal recycling yard.

Firefighters from several different stations were called to the blaze at Penny Metal Recycling Ltd. in the area of 114 Avenue and 143 Street at around 4:30 a.m.

“When I first arrived flames were shooting from the roof. They were approximately 10 to 15 feet above the roof level,” Gary Gamble, district chief with Edmonton Fire Rescue Services, said.

The roof of the building caved in, causing firefighters to battle the blaze from the outside of the building. The fire was under control by 6 a.m.
