MONTREAL – Another round of demonstrations is underway today against the Formula One Grand Prix in Montreal.
A small group of protesters clanging pots and pans is marching downtown through the centre of the celebrations.
Meanwhile closer to the race track police seized firecrackers from two people and say they could be ticketed under a municipal bylaw.
There is a heightened police presence on downtown streets, at the race itself, and on the city’s metro system.
The Grand Prix race has become a lightning rod for demonstrations against student tuition fee increases in particular and capitalism in general.
A feminist group is also planning a protest against the race today.
For the past two nights, protesters have been trying to reach Montreal’s Crescent Street, a popular party strip and the epicentre of the festivities.
Riot police have used pepper spray and arrests to keep them on the perimeter, while some protesters tossed bottles and other projectiles.
