HMCS Windsor has been forced to dock in the United States after the submarine developed a mechanical problem at sea.

Commodore Craig Baines says the sub was headed back to Halifax on Monday when there was a minor issue with its battery cells.

Baines says the Windsor was redirected to the Norfolk naval base in Virginia where it arrived Thursday.

He says once the investigation is complete, the sub will resume its journey home to Halifax, but he couldn’t say when that would be.
