Feral rabbits in Victoria to be safely relocated to U.S. sanctuary

A group of rabbits is called a herd and a herd of rabbits lives in a warren — and there’s one warren in Victoria where the herd is being moved south of the border.

An 80-deep herd of feral bunnies has made their home in the boulevard at the Helmcken Trans-Canada interchange in the View Royal community. While rabbits are cute and furry, when it comes to a busy interchange, they become a distraction for drivers and a potential hazard for all road users.

But the feral rabbits will soon have a new, safe home thanks to the efforts of local volunteers. In the fall, a volunteer group offered up the money to spay, neuter and relocate the herd. Since that time, the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure has worked with the group to organize a new home.

A plan is now in place to move the 80 rabbits to a private sanctuary in the U.S. Over the following weeks, a professional trapper will begin to capture the rabbits. After being trapped, the rabbits will be spayed or neutered by local veterinarians and then relocated.

Once the rabbits are removed, crews will be sent in to repair the areas damaged by their burrows and harden the infrastructure to discourage future attempts at recolonization.

The ministry would like to remind people that abandoning rabbits outside is not a good practice and if you are not able to keep your pet, contact an animal shelter.
