RCMP are looking for help finding the owners of a dog found in a partly frozen pond near Lake Echo late Wednesday night.
Shortly after midnight, Halifax RCMP were called by a concerned citizen who said there was a dog in distress along Highway 7. When officers arrived, they followed the sound of whimpering and found the dog in the pond.
The dog wouldn’t move and police couldn’t tell if he was injured or stuck in the snow and ice.
An officer went into the pond and rescued the dog, and they immediately wrapped the in a patrol jacket to keep her warm. Police say she was favouring one of her back legs, but seemed healthy.
The dog was taken to the Metro Animal Emergency Clinic in Dartmouth. The clinic determined she was 10 years old and had been on her own for a while. They also found she was favouring her hind leg because of arthritis.
She was taken to Homeward Bound City Pound once she was in stable condition. Police say she is eating, and pound staff are calling her a, “very sweet girl.”
She doesn’t have a collar or microchip, so RCMP investigators are canvassing the neighbourhood attempting to identify her owners.

RCMP are also reminding folks to keep their pets inside overnight during the cold winter months.
