MONTREAL – Quebec’s Transport Minister has announced there will be a parliamentary commission to find a way for taxis and Uber to coexist.

The announcement comes after 4,000 taxi drivers filed a request for an injunction to prevent the ride-sharing service from operating in the province.
“It’s simple: taxi is legal and Uber is illegal. The law says it. The law is clear. We simply want the law to be applied,” said Benoit Jugand with the RTAM union that represents drivers, Tuesday.
“We’re asking for Uber to be deactivated for all of the province of Quebec.”
The taxi industry argued Uber is operating illegally, without special licenses or proper insurance to carry passengers.

Minister Jacques Daoust did not give a specific date for the hearings, but said he hopes it happens “in the weeks to come.”

He went on to say he wants a regulatory framework in place “soon.”
