Deputy Chief Peter Sloly is on “annual leave” after making some controversial comments about the current state of police operations.

Sloly has come under fire for saying the force could slash jobs in favour making better use of technology.

The police union is now calling for an investigation on whether he violated the code of conduct.

Sloly was off work Tuesday but Toronto police spokesperson Mark Pugash could not reveal if he had previously planned to take time off or how long the leave will last.

Sloly gave a talk for the Studio Y fellowship program at the MaRS Discovery District last Friday, where he delivered candid criticisms of the Toronto Police Service’s policing model, spending and what he called its slow embrace of technology and social media.

“We run around all over the city in the most unfocused way, reacting to what you call us for, as opposed to trying to understand what’s going on and … putting our most important resources in the best place,” Sloly said.

Mayor John Tory told reporters on Tuesday the comments made by Sloly weren’t untrue.

“I actually agree and so does the KPMG study with a lot of the things that have been put forward, as changes are needed to be examined on the context on how we do policing,” Tory said.

“2016 is a time when policing needs and policing methods are going to be different than they were in 1986 or 1966.”
