It was probably more snow than most of them had ever seen.
A family of Syrian refugees arriving in Ottawa from Toronto on Wednesday was given a crash course in Canadian winter as they emerged from the airport terminal and were confronted with nearly a foot of the white stuff.
Global News captured the antics of the unidentified children and their caregivers as they stomped through the snow and tossed handfuls into the air, laughing. The family had to wait a few minutes before being picked up and transported to Maison Sophia, a reception house for government-sponsored refugees in the ByWard Market.
Ottawa received its first blast of winter weather on Tuesday, with 30cm of snow falling on the city. The storm followed several weeks of unseasonably warm weather in the nation’s capital.
As of Dec. 28, Citizenship and Immigration Canada reported that 3,701 Syrian refugees had landed in Canada. The tally started on Nov. 4, with the government initially promising to get 25,000 – and then 10,000 – refugees onto Canadian soil by Dec. 31.
