Star Wars: The Force Awakens smashes Fandango box office records

Star Wars: The Force Awakens once again proves to be a smash hit even before it begins screening: vendor website Fandango has already sold more tickets for the film than it has for any other film — during its entire run in theatres.

Jurassic World previously held the top spot, ahead of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, and Avengers: Age of Ultron.

The long-anticipated film brings classic fan favourites such as Princess Leia and Chewbacca along with newcomers to the big screen Dec. 17 in North America, following a few days of screenings overseas.

This will be the seventh film of the Star Wars series since its debut in 1977. There have been two trilogies so far, and two more films slated to be released after The Force Awakens will complete a third trilogy.

The film has already raked in more than US$100 million, Variety reported Tuesday, and is set to make more than $200 million in its first weekend.
