Montreal promises to fix notoriously confusing parking signs

MONTREAL – The City of Montreal said it will reconfigure its notoriously difficult to decipher street parking signs.

That’s one of the main goals of the city’s new parking strategy, unveiled at City Hall on Wednesday.

After spending months studying the situation in Montreal, Mayor Denis Coderre said at a press conference that the city wants to harmonize parking strategies across all boroughs, while at the same time reducing the public’s dependency on cars and stimulating economic development.

Some 37 measures were announced.

Those include simplifying road signage, creating a municipal organization dedicated solely to parking management and normalizing parking management and rates.

The city is also pushing what it calls “intelligent parking” initiatives.

Among them:

  • Dynamic signage, which would alert drivers to parking availability in certain areas.
  • A new parking app, giving real-time updates on parking availability and restrictions.
  • Setting aside reserved parking spots for electric cars.
  • Implementing bike-friendly measures like more sheltered racks, bike-only parking spots and creating sustainable transportation areas that would accommodate BIXIs, bikes, taxis and car shares.
