Vancouver’s first ever cat cafe finally has an opening date – Monday, Dec. 14.

It has been almost two years since owner Michelle Furbacher had the idea of opening a cat cafe, named Catfe, in the city.

“It’s exciting to finally be bringing it to Vancouver,” said Furbacher, who raised more than $32,000 to help fund the project.

Popular in Japan, cat cafes are places people can go to have a drink or snack while spending time with cats.

“The hardest part was just finding the right space,” added Furbacher.

So far, she has two cats from the BC SPCA that will be at the cafe, but more will be arriving all the time. All the cats at the Catfe will be available for adoption.

Furbacher said she is excited about being able to share her idea with the community.

“It’s a void that we are filling,” she said. “A lot of people aren’t able to have cats of their own.”

Furbacher is also in the process of setting up a reservation system, as only 16 people maximum can be in the cat area of the cafe at one time. She cannot serve food on the cat side, but customers can purchase food and take it to the cat side.

Eventually they will have up to 12 cats at the Catfe.

The cafe will be located in the International Village Mall, at 88 West Pender Street, #2035. They will be open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., except on Thursdays when they will be closed so more cats can arrive.
