Guns, religious items found in abandoned car after crash in North York

TORONTO – Police are still on the hunt for an unspecified number of suspects after several guns, including silencers and religious items were found in a car following a crash in North York Friday morning.

The single vehicle collision happened just before 4 a.m. ET. in the area of Allen Road and Transit Road.

Police said a call for a suspected impaired driver led police to the scene of the crash.

“Officer got there and they were told the car had left the road and hit the curb. When they found the car there was no one in it,” said Toronto police spokesperson Mark Pugash.

Police said the occupants of a black Mercedes fled the scene and members of the emergency task force were called in to provide assistance.

“We had police dogs out, we had the ETF, we borrowed a helicopter from a GTA police service,” Pugash said. “Anytime we find guns, several guns, we take the matter seriously.”

The subsequent investigation led police to the discovery of two handguns, one machine gun, two silencers, small amounts of ammunition and religious items inside the vehicle.

Although police did not reveal the exact nature of the religious items, they don’t believe it is relevant to this case.

“They have made it very clear. They regard this as going to a guns and gang direction and the religious material at this point has no relevance to that,” said Pugash.

Police have not released any description of the suspects and are unclear how many people were in the vehicle at the time of the crash.

The vehicle has since been seized and police said it will be examined for further evidence.

The intersection was closed for the investigation but reopened to traffic just before 6 a.m. ET.
