Driver who caused fatal Highway 97 crash admits his guilt

KELOWNA – A motorist who caused a fatal highway crash in Kelowna has pleaded guilty to driving without due care and attention.

The head-on collision near the airport in August 2014 killed Eva Mason and left her husband with permanent brain damage.

Doug Mason has no memory of the crash.

“I was in the hospital for a lot of it, I was out for a lot of it. They put you in a coma, you don’t know too much, you don’t remember too much. All I know I was there for a long time getting healthy and having people help me,” says Mason.

Seth Wing, 34, will be sentenced in the new year when it’s expected he will be handed a 30 day jail term and a driving prohibition.

Doug Mason isn’t so sure that is punishment enough.

“Probably not,” says Mason. “Look what I’ve been through for the last while. He put me away for a long time, so it’s tough.”

Mason has launched a civil law suit against Wing, seeking compensation for his injuries and losses.

At the time of the crash, police said they suspected excessive speed was a factor.
