UPDATE: Arctic air alert ended for Metro Vancouver

UPDATE (5:18 a.m. PT, Nov.23): The Arctic air alert for Metro Vancouver has now ended. 

Metro Vancouver and other parts of the province are bracing for cold weather as a rush of Artic air is expected to hit the south coast late Monday or early Tuesday.

According to a special weather statement from Environment Canada, “Arctic air will arrive from the east, spilling out the coastal inlets and valleys first, spreading west toward Vancouver Island on Tuesday.

Metro Vancouver temperatures could drop somewhere between -5 °C and -10 °C with wind chill.

“As the leading edge of the coldest air of the season arrives, bursts of snowflurries may rapidly reduce visibility,” said Environment Canada. “Local snowfalls of a few centimetres are possible as the Arctic air arrives.”

Global BC meteorologist Kate Gajdosik says people in the Southern Interior will bear the brunt of the storm, with snowfall up to 15 centimetres.

“Daytime highs are expected to be below seasonal in the range of 5-10 degrees next week with cold wind chill values as well. Visibility will be reduced Monday through Tuesday from strong wind and blowing snow as the arctic front pushes south and meets the moisture from the intensifying low off the Washington coast,” she said.

Similar temperatures are expected in the Fraser Valley, Howe Sound, Vancouver Island and the Sunshine Coast.

Whistler is expected to get 15 centimetres of snow through Monday night.

The cold snap could last anywhere from four to six days.
