WINNIPEG — Mother Nature is poised to make her presence felt in Winnipeg.

Several centimetres of snow are expected to fall between Wednesday night and Thursday morning along with strong northwest winds.

The combination could create difficult conditions for drivers, “The thing that people really need to focus on is the fact that they need to adjust their driving habits, above and beyond everything just really slowing down,” said Liz Kulyk with CAA Manitoba.

With the arrival of winter, CAA recommends drivers have an emergency kit in their vehicles and that their batteries, wiper blades, lights and fluid levels have all been checked.

The first dose of winter weather is also causing tire installation shops to prepare for an influx of customers.

“It’s been getting pretty crazy, we’ve been having a lot of wait times, a lot of winter tires to do and this is just the beginning,” said Mike Simone, a service advisor at Canadian Tire.

There’s always a major uptick in business after the first significant snowfall, said Simone.

Stores that sell winter clothing are also expecting a surge in sales starting Thursday.

“The toques, the mitts and socks are the first things you see, a little bit of footwear and as it keeps getting colder that’s when you start to see things like the heavier winter jackets being sold,” said Ken Berg, store manager of Mountain Equipment Co-op.
