TORONTO – The World Series opener was delayed for almost seven minutes after Fox Sports temporary lost power Tuesday night – sending baseball fans into an uproar on social media.
The outage occurred during the bottom of the 4th inning of Game 1 of the World Series between the Kansas City Royals and New York Mets.
A Fox broadcast truck temporarily lost power outside of Kansas City’s Kauffman Stadium, leaving viewers at home with nothing to see other than a blank screen.
The game was temporarily delayed as the broadcast outage affected game officials from viewing video reply. Fox switched its signal to the Major League Baseball Network’s live international feed of the game, but that feed suffered a brief outage of MLB’s signal as well.
Fox issued a statement addressing the cause of the outage, saying it was a “rare electronics failure.”
“Before the start of the bottom of the fourth inning of tonight’s World Series Game 1, a rare electronics failure caused both the primary and backup generators inside the FOX Sports production compound to lose power,” the broadcaster said. “The issue was immediately addressed, although it resulted in the audience missing one at-bat during the time needed to switch to carriage of Major League Baseball’s international feed, powered by a different generator on site.”
Needless to say, the outage and apology didn’t go over so well as the broadcaster became the brunt of memes and joke on social media. Here’s a look:
