Multiple pedestrians struck prompts warning by Toronto police

TORONTO – Toronto police have issued a warning to motorists after at least 15 pedestrians were struck by vehicles Wednesday.

Toronto police say at least 12 people were hit by vehicles between during the morning rush hour in various parts of the city.

Police say a number of people were taken to hospital for injuries sustained in the collisions and others suffered minor injuries.

So far, police say none of the injuries resulted in a fatality.

“The injuries range from bumps and bruises all the way up to broken bones,” said Const. Clint Stibbe of Traffic Services.

Police are telling motorists to slow down due to the wet weather conditions and reduced visibility as a result of the darkness outdoors.

“Part of the reason is the road and weather conditions but in the end, it boils down to pedestrians in some cases and driver error,” said Const. Stibbe.

Pedestrians are also being reminded to be aware of your surroundings and to look both ways before crossing the street.

On average, police say they normally get six pedestrians struck over a 24-hour period.

Parts of Southern Ontario are currently under a rainfall warning due to remnants of Hurricane Patricia moving its way north through the region Wednesday and Thursday.
