Paco waited faithfully by his owner’s body on a busy street in Jacksonville, Fla. after she was killed in a hit-and-run.
Kelly Black, 42, was walking her dog on Friday morning when a tractor-trailer backed out of a parking lot, struck her and dragged her down the street.
As authorities arrived to investigate and remove Black’s body, Paco lay on the street, not moving from her side.
Black’s mother, Pat Johnson, said she is in shock and is appealing to the public for any information that might help paint a clearer picture of the incident. So far, Paco is the only witness.
“I wish somebody would call and tell what they’ve seen, or what happened and why it happened,” Johnson told CBS affiliate Action News Jax.
Police say they believe the driver may not have been aware he had hit anyone.
In an email to Global News, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said there were no updates since the weekend and that it was an ongoing investigation.
According to Johnson, her daughter walked her two dogs Paco and Sambo twice every day. Since their owner’s death, they have been forlorn.
“They’re going to be real sad. Their mama’s not home with them no more,” she said. “Mama’s not coming back, I guess, no more.”
