EDMONTON — A pilot project that banned parking on one side of residential streets during the winter will not continue this season.
The snow removal plan was tested out in four Edmonton neighbourhoods last winter: West Jasper Place, Crestwood, Haddow and Henderson Estates.
A parking ban was placed on one side of the street so road crews could create windrows on that side. Drivers were free to park on the other side of the road for the season.
“There wasn’t enough support to continue that specific version of the parking ban. Not enough people felt the trade-off was worth losing parking for the entire winter season versus the service level they saw,” said Ward 1 city councillor Andrew Knack.

Knack said a lot was learned about snow removal, adding this was a way to try to improve services without increasing spending.
“We’ve got to deliver that service as best we can without increasing the budget substantially,” he said. “I think it was a good way to start the conversation. This winter we’ll have a bigger conversation with everyone and maybe next one we can make some changes that will help everyone.”
In a city survey, nearly 70 per cent of respondents said there was no benefit to them with the one-side parking ban.
