TORONTO — RCMP Sgt. Penny Hermann admits it’s a “vague” request.

They won’t say what the investigation’s about or how these two men are involved, or any other details about them. But they want the public’s help identifying them.

RCMP have released this photo of two men they say may be able to help with an undisclosed investigation.

“Unfortunately we can’t discuss what the investigation is all about, we just want the public’s assistance in identifying those two individuals,” Hermann said.

“The one thing I can say to you is that those pictures were taken in the GTA. … Unfortunately it’s very vague, but I can’t say more than that.”

Toronto-based lawyer and legal analyst Lorne Honickman said it’s not uncommon for police to release photos and ask the public for assistance, but there’s usually more information given with regards to the investigation.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“I don’t have a recollection of that happening before … just putting out a photo and just saying ‘We want to identify these people because they’re involved in an investigation,’ that normally doesn’t happen,” he said.

Honickman said there’s no privacy issue with police releasing photos of people wanted for assistance in an investigation if the photos have been taken in a public place, as they appear to be in this case.

“We don’t have any reasonable expectation of privacy walking down the street — you can get your picture taken by cameras in 100 different directions,” he said.

“So essentially I don’t think that there’s anything untoward as to what the RCMP are doing, the only interesting thing to me is that they’re not really specifying the type of investigation that this is about.”
