Shooting at Northern Arizona University leaves 1 dead, 3 injured

One person is dead and three others are injured following a shooting at Northern Arizona University early Friday morning, school officials confirm.

The suspected shooter, identified by police as 18-year-old Steven Jones, was in custody, said university police Chief JT Fowler.

A tweet on the school’s Twitter account at 3:55 a.m. MT stated the “situation is stabilized”.

The university said the incident occurred outside Mountain View Hall on the northeast end of the Flagstaff Campus. Police said the shooting started after an ‘altercation’ between two student groups around 1:20 a.m MT.

The student who died was identified by the school as Colin Brough. The victims being treated at Flagstaff Medical Center are Nicholas Prato, Kyle Zientek and Nicholas Piring.

The three injured have been taken to Flagstaff Medical Center.

The dorm is home to many of the campus’ sororities and fraternities, according to the school’s website.

“This is not going to be a normal day at NAU,” said school president Rita Cheng. “Our hearts are heavy.”

According to the school’s website, the building is a dorm housing most of the campus’ Greek system students.

NAU Public Relations Director Cindy Brown said she doesn’t know what caused the shooting and also didn’t have any details about the suspect and victims, their conditions and whether they are students.

More than 20,000 students are enrolled at the Flagstaff campus.
