Out-of-control Porsche slams into spectators during auto show in Malta

At least 26 people were injured during an auto show in Malta Sunday after a car went out of control at high speed and slammed through a barrier into a crowd of spectators.

The incident occurred around 2 p.m. at the Paqpaqli ghal-Istrina motorshow. The Porsche 918 Spyder was being driven by British tycoon Paul Bailey on an unused airport taxiway in the Hal Farrug district.

“The car was speeding down the taxiway when a back wheel went on the grass. The car spun out of control, went through the barriers where a large crowd was watching, and into the area of the static car exhibition,” an unidentified eyewitness told The Times of Malta.

Parliamentary Secretary for Health Chris Fearne confirmed to local media that at least 26 people had been injured, five of whom remain in critical condition. The injuries include head injuries, multiple fractures, abdominal injuries, and a host of minor injuries.

Among those injured are the driver, along with a six-year-old girl and her mother.

This is the first serious accident in the 10-year-history of the Paqpaqli ghal-Istrina, a charity event intended to raise money for the Malta Community Chest Fund.

Bailey is a well-known supercar enthusiast with plenty of experience on the track. He has over 30 exotic cars in his personal collection including a customized McLaren, a Ferrari, and the Porsche Spyder he was driving at the time of the accident.
