Police investigating suspicious death after man killed by arrow in Kitchener

TORONTO — Police are investigating a suspicious death in Kitchener after an unidentified man was shot and killed with an arrow on Monday morning.

Officers responded to a report of an injured man who had suffered life-threatening injuries from an arrow in the Margaret Avenue and Union Street area of Kitchener at about 7 a.m.

Paramedics transported the man to hospital where he later died of his injuries. Police have notified the victim’s family and identified the deceased as 60-year-old Michael Gibbon.

“At this early stage in the investigation, the risk to public safety is not yet known,” Staff Sgt. Mike Haffner said in a release.

“The public should be vigilant, aware of their surroundings and are asked to report any suspicious activity to police.”

Homicide detectives and officers were on scene throughout the day Monday and will remain there through the evening and the coming days.

A police command post has been set up in the parking lot of Breithaupt Centre, located at 350 Margaret Ave.

Margaret Avenue between Union Street and Hartwood Avenue remains closed for investigators for the time being.

“These types of incidents bring trepidation and uncertainty”, said Chief Bryan Larkin.

“We live in a very safe community and the public can rest assure that our members are committed to a thorough investigation and to restoring a sense of calm.”

The Waterloo District School Board tweeted that 11 schools in the area were put on hold-and-secure, adding that “all students and staff are safe.”

WDSB spokeswoman Lynsey Meikle later said in an email that the hold and secure for the schools ended at 2:30 p.m. Monday afternoon.
