Suspect pleads guilty to manslaughter in 2009 death of Christopher Skinner

TORONTO – A man accused of being behind the wheel of a SUV that fatally struck Christopher Skinner in downtown Toronto six years ago has pleaded guilty to manslaughter.

Agustin Caruso, 23, had initially been charged with second-degree murder in the death of the 27-year-old but pleaded guilty to a lesser charge on Monday.

Skinner was killed after attempting to hail a cab on Adelaide Street in the city’s entertainment district around 3 a.m. on Oct. 18, 2009.

Police say he may have “inadvertently” come into contact with a passing vehicle when some of the occupants got out and assaulted him.

The vehicle then ran over him. Police allege Caruso was behind wheel of the black SUV.

Investigators say there were six people in the car at the time of the incident, four men and two women.

As a result of the investigation, three more suspects have been arrested and charged in Skinner’s death.

Jamaal Phillips Bond and Nicholas Swaby both face charges of assault causing bodily harm with Bond facing an additional charge of obstructing police.

Anthony Samuel was charged with conspiracy to commit aggravated assault and obstructing police.
