WATCH: California dad builds bed with slide, secret room using IKEA parts

When Eric Strong’s five-year-old son asked for the “most awesome bed ever,” Strong took on the challenge.

The Palo Alto, CA-based doctor got creative with some IKEA parts, turning his son’s first “big kid bed” into a play space complete with a slide and a secret room.

Strong built the fanciful bed in their family garage using two Kura beds, a Trofast storage set, a Besta shelving unit and some extra lumber and hardware. Final cost? $665.

Some of the special features include a rope and pulley system, a ball run, and a sneaky secret door latch disguised as a book.

The secret room is large enough to fit an adult, outfitted with colourful LED lighting and a hidden sliding window the five-year-old can peek out from. There’s even an escape hatch in the case of an emergency.

Strong posted a video of him building the bed in August 2014, but it only went viral over the past week after being posted on Reddit last Monday. It now has more than 2 million views.

In a response video posted to YouTube on Tuesday, Strong said he’s since modified the wooden posts at the bottom of the bed’s slide to keep rambunctious visitors from injuring themselves. And he reassured concerned viewers about the safety of the structure in general.

“I’ve seen my son and his friends play on this for a year. There’s nothing else more dangerous about it than there is about dozens of things that are in everyone’s house,” he said to viewers.
