After much anticipation, the theme song for the upcoming “Spectre” Bond film was released, Friday on Capitol Records.
Multi-platinum selling British artist Sam Smith sings and co-wrote ‘Writing’s On The Wall” with longtime collaborator, Grammy award winner Jimmy Napes.
The track features orchestra strings and Smith’s trademark falsetto vocals.
The drama-filled tune departs from Smith regular pop anthems. The artist explains he “wanted to bring out something timelessly classic.”
“I hope that people are not expecting for me to be bringing out a big pop song because that’s not what I wanted to do here,” said Smith. “I wanted to bring out something timelessly classic, that works with the project and the film.
“I’m not writing this for me. This isn’t about me, about my life. This is a James Bond song. And it’s the first time I’ve ever had to almost play a little bit of a character. So I just hope people listen to it and just think: ‘That’s Bond, that sounds like a Bond theme.’ That’s what I want.”

The theme was released Friday morning on BBC Radio 1, and immediately drew both support and criticism from franchise fans – including one ex-007 himself, Sir Roger Moore.
But some of the reviews were less than charitable.
It is the first James Bond theme song recorded by a British male solo artist since 1965.
The track was recorded in January but surrounded by secrecy until 8 Sept. 2015.
Smith said he wrote the song in 20 minutes after reading the “Spectre” script.
“Spectre,” directed by Sam Mendes and starring Daniel Craig, is set for release in the U.K. on October 26, and in the U.S. on November 6.
