EDMONTON — A man who had been running from police was apprehended at 12:25 p.m. inside the Gold Bar wastewater treatment plant, Edmonton Police confirm.
Officers converged early Friday morning on the treatment plant to search for the man.
Sherwood Park RCMP were originally chasing the suspect, who made his way into Edmonton and inside the treatment plant at the eastern edge of the city.
Edmonton police got involved around 4 a.m., locking down the facility and asking staff to stay in a secure, isolated area while they look for the man. Police also asked nearby residents to keep their distance from the scene.
Police canines were brought in to help in the search and the man was contained and arrested in a southwest section of the building, climbing around in ductwork.

Several hours earlier Mounties were called to a restaurant in Sherwood Park, where police believe the man assaulted his partner. Edmonton police said the suspect was wanted on warrants for domestic violence. He fled with what police said was a stolen vehicle, and abandoned the truck in the North Saskatchewan River before taking off on foot.
It is not clear how the man entered the wastewater treatment facility.

Epcor said the employees inside were surrounded by police and the plant remained fully operational.
A spokesperson said the search was expected to take hours because of the sheer size of the facility, which is comprised of several buildings, tanks and tunnels.
