MOSCOW – A fire at Moscow’s largest airport prompted an evacuation of all passengers and delayed at least 50 flights.
The Domodedovo airport said in a statement on Thursday that a small fire in a building contractor’s storage facility on the basement floor triggered the alarm system at 7:20 a.m. local time (0420 GMT) and sent plumes of smoke into the terminal. Normal operations resumed two hours later.
Passengers posted pictures on social media of crowds waiting outside the airport terminal while the departures board showed more than 50 flights being delayed.
Domodedovo was Russia’s largest airport last year by the number of passengers but is trailing behind another airport in the first half of this year.
