Natural gas bubbling up through sidewalk after gas leak in Vancouver

Vancouver Fire and Rescue Service (VFRS) and Fortis BC crews have brought a gas leak in downtown Vancouver under control.

VFRS said natural gas could be seen bubbling up through the sidewalk as they tried to stop the leak. Fortis says a steel service line was damaged.

The leak was on Georgia Street, near the Art Gallery, and the street was closed between Howe and Hornby. The street has reopened.

The Art Gallery remained open.

Fortis BC spokesman Michael Allison says technicians will have to go door to door or business to business to relight pilot lights for appliances and that could take some time.
