UPDATE: Body found in Vernon’s Polson Park

UPDATE: Vernon RCMP say a man in his 40’s was found dead in Vernon’s Polson Park but are not releasing his identity until relatives are notified. An autopsy will be performed in the next few days to determine the cause of death. B.C. Coroner’s Service and Vernon’s Serious Crimes Unit are investigating.

VERNON — Vernon RCMP have cordoned off a large part of Polson Park following the discovery of a man’s body.

“When we discover a body, as we have here, it is better to cordon off a large area in case we need to expand our search from where a body is,” says RCMP spokesperson, Gord Molendyk. “We don’t know if we are dealing with a major crime scene or if someone passed away in the park.”

The body was found Wednesday morning near the lawn bowling grounds.

“We don’t know what we have. We’ve called in our investigators,” says Molendyk.

He says there were no obvious signs of trauma to the body and it is too early to say if foul play was involved in the death.

“We now have a person that is deceased in the park. We have to take all steps. We have to treat it very much like it is a homicide, it may not be, [but] we are going to treat it that way until we establish what we have,” he says.

More details to come.
