WINNIPEG – Tagged monarch butterflies will be released Wednesday afternoon at the Assiniboine Park Zoo’s Shirley Richardson Butterfly Garden.
The fifth annual release of monarchs will start with a short educational session at 1:15 p.m., followed by the release of the insects for their winter migration south to Mexico. It is open to the public.
“The tag and release is an important tool in the conservation of monarch butteflies,” said Janice Martin, curator of the Assiniboine Park Zoo.
The monarch release is done in partnership with Monarch Watch and the Monarch Teachers Network. It will be delayed to Thursday in case of rain.
