TORONTO — Police say a 39-year-old male inmate has died in custody after a medical incident at a maximum security jail in London, Ont.

Few details have been released, but police and paramedics responded to the Elgin-Middlesex Detention Centre at about 8 p.m. on Sunday after a report of an inmate in “medical distress.”

The unidentified man was transported by ambulance to London Health Sciences Centre where “life-saving intervention” continued until about 8:45 p.m., when the man was pronounced dead.

Police Major Crime Section officers attended the prison but foul play is not suspected in the man’s death.

An autopsy is being performed today and police will assist the coroner with the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the cause of death.

The prisoner’s name has not been released and police have not said what the medical issue that led to the man’s death was.
