What happened Friday night in Richmond’s Dover Park?

The park near No. 2 Road and Westminster Highway was closed for hours Friday night, following a police incident that Richmond RCMP are revealing little about.

“At this time, because of investigation integrity, we cannot release any specific details about it, but we want to reassure the public that we always have their safety in mind, and that we know that there is no concern for their safety,” said Cst. Adriana Peralta with the Richmond RCMP.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Witnesses said it began around 11 p.m. on Friday. They heard sobbing and yelling in the park, and then gunfire. A trail of blood could still be seen between the park and a nearby gas station today.

But aside from revealing that one person was transported to hospital, RCMP and BC Ambulance Service have declined comment. There’s no word on the condition of the victim, the nature of the police incident, if there are any suspects, or if the incident is believed to be gang related.

The latter is a particular concern to many residents Global News spoke to. While the neighbourhood is generally quiet, Dover Park was the scene of a 2007 gang-related shootout.

“We recognize the public has questions and they want answers to those questions,” said Peralta.

“Unfortunately, we also have to weigh out the integrity of this investigation. We want to reassure the public that there is no concern for their safety and we are investigating this.”
