Nelson Mandela’s grandson to apply for bail over alleged rape of a teenage girl

JOHANNESBURG – One of Nelson Mandela’s grandsons has appeared in a South African court on charges of rape.

A judge will decide on Friday whether Mbuso Mandela will be granted bail. The 24-year-old is accused of raping a 15-year-old girl.

Members of the Mandela family were in the cramped courtroom as Mbuso Mandela appeared in court for the second time this week.

According to South African law, due to the seriousness of the charge, his defence attorneys will have to present evidence to support Mbuso Mandela’s release on bail.

Mbuso Mandela has been in police custody since his arrest on Saturday.

Police said the rape allegedly took place at a restaurant in Greenside, a Johannesburg suburb, on Aug. 7.
